Chapter Six: Market Stepmommy

Conner waited for Barbara to let him past the security system, and he followed her directions to the kitchen, where Jason scrambled to make their sandwiches. “Hey, Jason?” Conner asked. Jason froze in place, staring up at Conner. “How hard did you fall?”

“Oh, not hard. I have nerve damage. Like today isn’t a bad pain day, but it’s a numbness day,” Jason explained, “It’s funny how a few hits to the head can do a lot to your body in the long run.”

“Sports?” Conner asked.

“Not exactly,” Jason replied as he finished making breakfast. “Gromit, here, buddy. Thanks for the pick me up this morning.” He fed Gromit two slices of bacon and washed his hands. Gromit brushed his face against Jason’s ankle. “I love you too, Gromit.”

“Food smells great,” Conner replied as Jason gave him his plate.

“Thanks… Barbara! Food’s done!” Jason hollered.

“Why are you yelling? Just use the intercom,” Barbara complained as she entered the room. “Hi, Baby Boy, watch out,” Barbara whispered as Gromit walked past her, proudly chewing his treat.

“Oh, Barbara. Conner thought you were my stepmom,” Jason chuckled.

“I would never date Bruce, though… That’d be gross, but I might start telling women at the grocery store that you’re my son. Do you think that works the same way it does for cute babies in sitcoms? How about it, Jason? Do you wanna help me find you a new stepmommy?” Barbara joked.

"I thought you were talking to that computer guy?" Jason asked.

"I can't have a backup plan? Besides, what if you don't like your future stepdad—?"

"Eww, okay. This joke is getting gross. Conner, she isn't my stepmom, she's a friend of the family. We wouldn't know what to do without her. Hey, Barbara, could you get Conner into school with me?" Jason asked as he took three pill bottles from Gromit's backpack. Conner watched as Jason washed his pills down with half a bottle of water.

"Mhm, I'll have him enrolled by Sunday night," Barbara answered.

Conner looked up from his sandwich. "Whoa, you guys were serious? That's—. Wow. Thank you," Conner smiled.

"It was easy. Don't worry about it. Do me a favor and make sure these two get outdoors,” Barbara requested, “And we’ll call it even.” Conner chuckled and nodded.

“Jason, where do you like to hang out?” Conner asked.

“I haven’t been to the museum in a while,” Jason replied, “Oh, and there’s this place called The Sewer, and they play live music sometimes. But it’s only cool at nighttime…” Jason looked at Barbara with wide eyes.

“I’ll watch Gromit while you hit the teen club tonight, but only because he’s great at keeping me company. How about it, Gromit? Do you want to work with Auntie Barbara tonight?” Barbara asked as she scratched under Gromit’s chin.

“Nothing too dangerous,” Jason warned her. Barbara nodded. “Does anybody want another sandwich? I’ve got a bunch of leftover bacon.”

“Please,” Barbara replied. Conner nodded along with her.

After breakfast, Jason let Conner go to his room with him while he got ready to go out. “Thanks for coming over. Are you gonna spend the night after The Sewer or—? Sorry, I haven’t been out and about a whole lot, so I’m excited to have somebody to hang out with—.”

“It’s okay. I don’t mind. I don’t have anyone normal like you to hang out with, so it’s nice to be able to chill with you,” Conner smiled. Jason threw on one of Bruce’s old beat-up flannels and pulled on his pants. Conner laid back and stretched out on Jason’s bed. “What’s it like living with Bruce Wayne? Is he like your dad or something?”

“Yeah, he is my dad. I love him a lot, but he’s got this weird vendetta against you because he thinks you’re gonna hurt Superman or something,” Jason confessed, “Which is why he can never know you’re Superboy. He’d flip his lid if he knew we were friends.”

Conner turned on his side and grinned at Jason. “So, we’re friends?” Conner asked.

Jason’s cheeks went rosy. “Shut up,” Jason giggled without meaning to. “We can do whatever you want between the museum and The Sewer tonight.”

“What is The Sewer exactly?” Conner questioned.

“It’s a nightclub for teens. After eight, it’s sixteen and up,” Jason replied, “I snuck in once when I was eleven… But I haven’t been able to get in since.”

Conner chuckled. “I’m sorry. I’m not—. Well, I kind of—. I imagined a tinier you in a nightclub moshing with teenagers,” Conner laughed. Jason snickered, and it built into a full-body laugh that left him doubled over.

“Oh, it was terrible,” Jason laughed, “I got tossed around like a ragdoll.” Conner and Jason laughed until tears rolled down their cheeks.

“I would’ve given anything to be a real kid,” Conner mumbled. Jason stopped laughing.

“You are a real kid,” Jason replied. Conner smiled and shook his head.

“I’m a science project being passed off as a kid,” Conner replied, “You don’t have to be nice about it. I know what I am—.”

“Clone or no clone, you’re a regular sixteen-year-old kid to me—. No, you’re better than most sixteen-year-old kids. You’re empathetic. You’re not judgmental. You’re funny. You’re friendly—. I mean—. I’m glad you were made in a lab because that’s what it took for me to get a friend like you,” Jason stated. Conner smiled.

“Thanks, Jason,” Conner whispered, “Hey, do you like fast cars?”

“Do ducks fly south for the winter?” Jason replied. Conner laughed.

“How ‘bout I take you flying on the way home tonight?” Conner suggested.

"Yeah, I'd love it, but my chair—."

"I can carry the chair too. Just fold it up. What do you say?" Conner asked. Jason nodded, his mouth open at the thought of flying. "It'll be fun. I promise."

Barbara knocked on the door. "No curfew tonight. It’s Saturday, and I think the chances of you two getting arrested are slim to none,” Barbara whispered.

Jason’s phone rang. “Oh! Hold on, it’s my dad. Mind if I take this?” Jason asked. Conner shook his head. “Hi, Bruce. Everything okay from abroad?”

“Mhm… I miss you,” Bruce whispered, “I don’t think I’ll be home this week, though… Jason, are you alright with Barbara until I get home?”

“Mhm… Are you gonna—? When are you and Alfred coming home? Do you have any idea?” Jason asked. A loud wind blew on Bruce’s end.

“It’ll be at least a week… Hopefully no more than a month, Jason—.”

“Is it dangerous?” Jason asked. Conner heard Jason’s pulse pick up speed.

“No more than the usual… I love you, Jason,” Bruce whispered.

“I love you too… Bruce? Um… If you’re in trouble—. Can you have Alfred write me or call me if something happens?” Jason asked.

“Uh-huh… Jason, are you alright?” Bruce questioned.

“Yeah… I just—. I’m hanging out with my friend tonight, so I might not answer my phone,” Jason replied.

“Okay… Be good, and feel free to call me if you need something,” Bruce whispered, “I gotta go.”

“Bye, D—. Bye, Bruce,” Jason whispered. He hung up and dropped his phone in his lap. “Okay. Ready to go?” Jason smiled, but there was no hiding his discomfort.

Bart’s really awful with 21st century slang and he doesn’t care

Bart uses homie platonically and romantically he won’t let anyone tell him he can’t and yj is suffering immensely bc Bart will introduce them to someone “Oh, hey guys! Meet my homie, [Name]!” then yj finds out two months later that they met Bart’s s/o and Kon refuses to accidentally be nice to Bart’s s/o again which leads to him being mean to everyone Bart brings to meets them. Tim and Anita are interrogating them to figure out if they’re dating or just friends, Greta’s really nice to everyone Bart brings over but she will threaten the shit out of them beforehand, Cassie’s like crushing bricks with their bare hands and being polite but clearly not friendly, and Cissie somehow always manages to be doing maintenance on her bow and arrows when Bart brings someone over.  And when whoever Bart brought over voices their concerns about his friends not liking them it goes one of two ways:

Bart’s completely oblivious bc yj are passive aggressive losers that don’t understand or care for boundaries and Bart doesn’t make it any better bc sometimes he doesn’t notice when they’re being overprotective bc he thinks they’re just being weird as usual

Or Bart complaining that they’re overprotective and none of his friends want to come back and Kon’s giving him a dirty look bc “I brought a guy over and you stuCK YOUR HAND IN HIS CHEST THEN THREATENED HIM VERBALLY!!” and Bart just pats him on the shoulder and goes “that’s different, he wasn’t good for you” and Kons fuming

Headcanon A:  realistic

kon is the dog they put in with the cheetahs to keep them from going fucking insane. tim cassie and bart are the cheetahs.

Headcanon B: while it may not be realistic it is hilarious

they all imprinted on nightwing like ducklings and tim cant decide whether to be smug or mad about it. on the one hand, hell yeah nightwing is the coolest!!! do you wanna join his nightwing fanclub he's president and everyone can have matching t-shirts. on the other hand. guys stop it he's not actually cool i've seen him eat cold pizza off the floor. guys this is cringe. guys that's MY big brother stop stealing him. dick those are MY besties stop stealing them. GUYS...

Headcanon C: heart-crushing and awful, but fun to inflict on friends

tim and cassie have to work through their shiny brand-new extreme anxiety complexes around kon and bart being on the field again after their resurrections. bart actually gets a little upset with them both for being overprotective, at one point. (this is canon to an extent in that it is a factor in the koncassie breakup, but i think we can do more with it!)

Headcanon D: unrealistic, but I will disregard canon about it because I reject canon reality and substitute my own.

they are all in their 20s at this point. the first year she actually got a job, cassie realized she had no idea what she was doing and freaked out and phoned up tim like "HOW DO I FILE TAXES????" and he got so excited to do them for her that it broke through her mild panic because hey. tim? what's wrong with you. he says its just satisfying to see the numbers all line up.

Kondami as a crackship but in the sense that both genuinely did it as a joke and because what it would be like to in a relationship with a robin/super since their s/o is with other people and they think their ship is sailed. BONUS points if they're not even doing anything intimate (kon would never do that) they are literally just going on dates. Thats it.

EVERYONE in the batfam has krypotonite pitchforks for kon and jon is joining them (except for cass and jason because both now its just a joke and kon would never actually do anything)

Tim is experiencing the biggest overprotective big brother energy hes ever had his entire life and is fighting for his life in trying to subtly tell bernard that his best friend is dating his little brother and how much he wants to murder him. Which one? Who knows babe. Maybe both.

Jon is... upset? Disappointed? Heartbroken? (what-why?) And betrayed beyond imagine. How dare his brother. How dare kon. Not only was he already guilty when he started dating jay but he dare. He DARE date DAMIAN?? Damian is HIS robi-. Wha. What do you mean thats romantic no it isn't-. Oh. Oh.

Jon 100% would realize he loves damian and finally confronts both about it, Tim not only won't realize kon's crush on him but won't requite it either (sorry kon) kon is super happy for the young robin and super tho, glad at least a younger version of them are together

Kon and Damian would absolutely be platonically dating. Kon would take Damian out to show him things, like he wished someone showed him when he was younger. They might hold hands. Kon would put his arm around Damian, especially is he senses any undesirables staring at them. But mostly they just have fun, if only to ignore their heartbroken realities.

Bruce absolutely convinces half his kids that Kon is manipulating Damian and while Dick and Steph quietly brood and steam this is when Tim gets RADICALIZED and knows he has to decide between brother and best friend (he picks brother, obvi.)

When Jon realizes he is, in fact, in love with his best friend he just PANICS for a few days. Even when he tells Damian, he accidentally blurts it out. It was not a purposeful confession, at least not until him and Damian absolutely make out on a rooftop right after.

Meanwhile Kon's just happy his brother is happy and, surprisingly, Damian's happy. That little shit grew on him. Their happiness is his happiness, truly.

yeah, he's protective in his own way xD he mostly just thinks it's disgusting, but deep, deep down, he's worried about the age gap becoming a problem if they ever got serious with each other.

dick would be fine with the age gap, as they're both adults, but he'd be worried that kon was only settling for damian. he saw firsthand how deeply kon and tim care about each other, so he always thought those two would make it happen someday. that day just never happened, for some reason.

the others all have better things to do with their time than worry about who damian is boinking. except for bruce. but he's damian's biological father, so of course he cares.

It had been an emergency hail mary and Tim was all too aware of that. He was still busy with Gotham, still trying to grieve and get his home city back into balance; there was no guarantee he was available for Young Justice missions and catastrophes. Yet here he was. Clark had given him a ride and upon seeing his friends in trouble and a laser headed towards Bart, Tim had promptly flown into an overprotective rage. He'd blipped out of Superman's arms and continued to teleport down to the fight, right into the path of an attack Bart could... admittedly easily outpace.

It hurt, he was thrown into... was that a wall? It felt like a wall.

And still, he'd been ready to get to his feet to continue wailing on this particular enemy. A... robot? Oh God damnit, was Luthor throwing a fit about Kon again? He'd gotten up, wailing away with his bo staff with almost none of his usual control or strategy, just blipping all over the place, landing ferocious hits until he could get at the circuitry where he just blindly pulled at it all. Going absolutely ham on the thing with his friends was one hell of a reunion and now... well Bart was fussing. Understandably so.

He leaned into the hand on his cheek, letting the hood of his new uniform fall, as one gloved finger booped his boyfriend.

"Careful with the real names, babe, we're still masked." His smile only grew softer. "I'm okay. I'm gonna be a walking bruise tomorrow but I'm okay."

It was too late for Tim to worry about a raging and overprotective Superboy. That ship had sailed the moment that he’d heard Tim’s heartbeat spike and then slow to a concerning rate. Kon hated that there was little to nothing that he could do for the other. He didn’t have healing powers or anything of the sort. But seeing Tim in this state did little to calm the storm that raged in his chest.

“You’re a pretty bad liar, Rob.” There was nothing about this that screamed that Tim was okay. In fact he was pretty sure it was the exact opposite of okay. “I told you I wasn’t going anywhere. I was over at the manor picking through the rubble. Alfred told me what to look for.” He’s going to leave out that he was hyper focused on all of their heart beats. Kon didn’t need to be told by all of the bats that they didn’t need that.

They’d already lost Bruce. He wasn’t sure how any of them would handle losing someone else so soon. So he was going to do his best to keep that from happening. And if that meant that he was going to have to divide his time between Gotham and everything else. He was going to do that. Whether they liked it or not.

“Come on, I’ll get you back to the Belfry. Where you’re going to take a day off.”

that last post reminds me of how, similarly, it drives me up the wall whenever fandom (esp with regards to timkon) portrays kon as completely and utterly spineless and intimidated when it comes to bruce. (i mean, i'm not surprised, bc this comes from the same place as the content where tim is a fainting victorian maiden who needs to be protected by her strong stoic owner i mean father, which is definitely not a homophobic trope rooted in misogyny at all, but. that's a complaint for a different post.)

like, bruce's relationship with kon has admittedly been done differently by different writers and all, but at no point has kon ever backed down to him. during hypertime arc, bruce is cordial and even warm, in his way, as they send kon off:

later, towards the end of superboy '94, when kon and cass get into trouble and nearly get themselves killed, kon sees bruce being harsh on cass about it and inserts himself to demand he get half the blame and half the punishment, because it wasn't all on her. (i personally think the way bruce talks here is extremely cringefail and shitty, like... let's not make batman parrot racist rhetoric thanks, but. i blame that on writers moreso than the character.)

like, sure, he's a little hesitant (the "s-sir..." gets me.) but not enough to hold back an ounce in telling batman he's being unfair and an ass. he's not a shrinking violet just bc batman is ooo scary.

also coming to mind are:

a) the panels from batgirl (2000) where bruce is being an extremely overprotective and controlling figure over the idea of cass and kon being friends and clark tells him off for this (it's not directly kon interacting with bruce, but feels... relevant, lol, to the topic of bruce threatening kon and trying to scare him off in that possessive, steeped-in-misogyny way), as well as

b) the ones from tt03 where kon goes to gotham looking for tim, runs into bruce and steph-as-robin, and flips out like WHERE is tim, and bruce is just like. use your superhearing and figure it out. (note that he doesn't try to kick him out of gotham just for being there, either.)

i didn't include those last two bc i don't have them saved and frankly this post is long enough as is, but. you get the idea. kon isn't scared of batman. batman even likes him sometimes. and batman trying to intimidate him on purpose is something clark gets mad about.

Duke and Barbara? Chill as hell. Happy for you, man.

Cass? Also happy for Damian. SO happy for him. But will also murder Jon if she has to, and makes sure Damian and Jon both understand that. (Jon is lowkey petrified of her)

Steph is happy that Damian is happy. But she does sit him down and talks to him about some things to look out for and things he does NOT have to accept if he is uncomfortable, etc. Also mentions she will kill Jon if he asks.

Tim is...beside himself. How dare Damian date HIS best friend's little brother? Is this another dig at him? Is this some weird evil plot long game to kill him? Why is Jon going along with it? Does Jon also hate him? Is he going to die? Tim stop not everything is about you. Eventually Tim gives KON a long lecture and says if Jon ever hurts Damian, even a little, Tim will destroy every last Kryptonian left in the universe, even him.

Jason keeps showing up on Jon's patrol routes to give him the shovel talk (aka threaten Jon) but with a bigger and more deadly gun/weapon every time. At one point he just shows up in some alien laser sniper ship and Jon's just like 'JESUS JASON, I KNOW, I GET IT.'

Dick and Alfred are similar in that they're both very emotional about it, because they knew Damian at his worst. They watched him grow, and they are just SO happy that someone out there finally sees Damian for the beauty that he is and loves their boy as much as they do, if not more. Also Dick threatens Clark about it.

Bruce just short circuits for like three days and disappears. Damian thinks he's going to be disowned, to which the whole family say they'll disown Bruce first and strength in numbers. But then he comes back and just smiles at Damian a lot, and talks about how proud he is of him, that Jon is a good person, that Damian deserves this happiness, and to remember the code to their stash of Kryptonite. He ALSO rants to Clark about it, who finds it somewhat endearing how worried for Damian they all are, but they end up as just two old men sitting on a front porch reminiscing on how much they adore their boys, and how happy they are that they found each other.

(bonus: Kon texts Damian 'u hurt him, ill end you.' to which Damian texts back a thumbs up emoji.)

(bonus bonus: all the siblings and kon have stalked Jon and Damian's dates. They aren't even conspicuous about it. Damian and Jon just whole-heartedly ignore them.)
